CONSTRUCTION OF METASTABLE STATES IN QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS

2004

In this paper, we construct metastable states of atoms interacting with the quantized radiation field. These states emerge from the excited bound states of the non-interacting system. We prove that these states obey an exponential time-decay law. In detail, we show that their decay is given by an exponential function in time, predicted by Fermi's Golden Rule, plus a small remainder term. The latter is proportional to the (4+β)th power of the coupling constant and decays algebraically in time. As a result, though it is small, it dominates the decay for large times. A central point of the paper is that our remainder term is significantly smaller than the one previously obtained in [1] and as…

High energy neutrinos from novae in symbiotic binaries: The case of V407 Cygni

2010

Detection of high-energy (>= 100 MeV) gamma rays by the Fermi Large Area Telescope from a nova in the symbiotic binary system V407 Cygni has opened the possibility of high-energy neutrino detection from this type of source. A thermonuclear explosion on the white dwarf surface sets off a nova shell in motion that expands and slows down in a dense surrounding medium provided by the red giant companion. Particles are accelerated in the shocks of the shell and interact with the surrounding medium to produce observed gamma rays. We show that proton-proton interaction, which is most likely responsible for producing gamma rays via neutral pion decay, produces >= 0:1 GeV neutrinos that can be detec…

Tuning the Electronic Properties of the Dative N-B Bond with Associated O-B Interaction: Electron Localizability Indicator from X-Ray Wavefunction Re…

2016

Despite the immense growth in interest in difluoroborate dyes, the nature of the interactions of the boron atom within the N-BF2 -O kernel is not yet fully understood. Herein, a set of real-space bonding indicators is used to quantify the electronic characteristics of the dative N-B bond in difluoroborate derivatives. The atoms-in-molecules (AIM) partitioning scheme is complemented by the electron localizability indicator (ELI-D) approach, and both were applied to experimental and theoretical electron-density distributions (X-ray constrained wavefunction fitting vs. DFT calculations). Additionally, Fermi orbital analysis was introduced for small DFT models to support and extend the findings…

The unusual multiwavelength properties of the gamma-ray source PMN J1603-4904

2013

We investigate the nature and classification of PMNJ1603-4904, a bright radio source close to the Galactic plane, which is associated with one of the brightest hard-spectrum gamma-ray sources detected by Fermi/LAT. It has previously been classified as a low-peaked BL Lac object based on its broadband emission and the absence of optical emission lines. Optical measurements, however, suffer strongly from extinction and the absence of pronounced short-time gamma-ray variability over years of monitoring is unusual for a blazar. We are combining new and archival multiwavelength data in order to reconsider the classification and nature of this unusual gamma-ray source. For the first time, we stud…

The Topological Phase Transitions Related to Fermion Condensate

2014

In this chapter, we consider so-called topological phase transitions, taking place in normal Fermi liquid. In other words, here we are dealing with different instabilities of normal Fermi liquids relative to several kinds of perturbations of initial quasiparticle spectrum \(\varepsilon (p)\) and occupation numbers \(n(p)\) associated with the emergence of a multi-connected Fermi surface. Depending on the parameters and analytical properties of the Landau interaction, such instabilities lead to several possible types of restructuring of initial Landau Fermi liquid ground state. This restructuring generates topologically distinct phases. One of them is the FC discussed above, another one belo…

Antihyperon potentials in nuclei via exclusive antiproton–nucleus reactions

2015

Abstract The exclusive production of hyperon–antihyperon pairs close to their production threshold in p ‾ -nucleus collisions offers a unique and hitherto unexplored opportunity to elucidate the behavior of antihyperons in nuclei. For the first time we analyze these reactions in a microscopic transport model using the Giesen Boltzmann–Uehling–Uhlenbeck transport model. The calculation takes the delicate interplay between the strong absorption of antihyperons, their rescattering and mean field deflection as well as the Fermi motion of the struck nucleon into account. We find a substantial sensitivity of transverse momentum correlations of coincident Λ ‾ Λ -pairs to the assumed depth of the Λ…

FFLO state in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional optical lattices combined with a non-uniform background potential

2008

We study the phase diagram of an imbalanced two-component Fermi gas in optical lattices of 1-3 dimensions, considering the possibilities of the FFLO, Sarma/breached pair, BCS and normal states as well as phase separation, at finite and zero temperatures. In particular, phase diagrams with respect to average chemical potential and the chemical potential difference of the two components are considered, because this gives the essential information about the shell structures of phases that will occur in presence of an additional (harmonic) confinement. These phase diagrams in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions show in a striking way the effect of Van Hove singularities on the FFLO state. Although we focus o…

Microscopic quasiparticle-phonon description of odd-mass127−133Xeisotopes and their β decay

1998

Quasiparticle-phonon equations of motion are solved starting from a microscopic realistic many-body Hamiltonian. In this microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM) the relevant part of the three-quasiparticle Hilbert space may possibly be taken into account even in calculations using large single-particle bases. As an example, the MQPM is applied to the calculation of energy levels and Fermi and Gamow-Teller beta-decay transition amplitudes for transitions between odd-mass ${}^{127\ensuremath{-}133}\mathrm{Xe}$, ${}^{127\ensuremath{-}133}\mathrm{I}$, and ${}^{127\ensuremath{-}133}\mathrm{Cs}$ isotopes. Considering the fully microscopic nature of the MQPM, comparison of its results and da…

Free-fall expansion of finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensed gas in the non Thomas-Fermi regime

2008

We report on our study of the free-fall expansion of a finite-temperature Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of 87Rb. The experiments are performed with a variable total number of atoms while keeping constant the number of atoms in the condensate. The results provide evidence that the BEC dynamics depends on the interaction with thermal fraction. In particular, they provide experimental evidence that thermal cloud compresses the condensate.
